Deciding to try a muscle relaxation therapy for the first time — to smooth wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance — usually comes with a mix of curiosity and quiet anxiety. Will my face look stiff? Will the result look natural? What do I do after, and what should I avoid? And sometimes: am I even asking the right questions?
This article is not a clinical explainer. It is a 10-point checklist of practical things to know before you book — the small details no one tends to tell you in advance, but that make a real difference once you know them.
1. Confirm the Procedure Is Performed by a Doctor — Not a Technician
Muscle relaxation therapy for wrinkle correction is a medical procedure, not a spa service. The person performing it must be a licensed doctor with dermatology or aesthetic medicine training — not a technician who completed a short course. The difference is not in the equipment used, but in who understands facial muscle anatomy, who can place the treatment correctly, and who can manage an unexpected reaction if one occurs.
The simplest question to ask when booking: “Which doctor will personally perform my treatment?” If the answer is vague — keep looking.
2. Ask Clearly About the Product Being Used
Not all muscle relaxation formulations are equivalent. The market contains clinically certified products from reputable manufacturers — and also counterfeit or unverified products that have been over-diluted or stored at incorrect temperatures. A substandard product may simply not work, or worse, trigger an inflammatory response.
You have every right to ask: “What product is the clinic using, where is it sourced from, and are there valid import documents?” A reputable practice answers without hesitation.
3. Stop Blood-Thinning Medications 3–5 Days Before
Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and other NSAIDs thin the blood — increasing the risk of bruising at the treatment site. High-dose vitamin E, omega-3 supplements and alcohol have a similar effect. Stop these at least 3 days before your appointment — 5 days if you use them regularly.
Bruising after treatment is not dangerous but is cosmetically inconvenient and takes 1–2 weeks to resolve. Preparing correctly eliminates this entirely.
4. Do Not Proceed If Your Skin Has an Active Issue
Active inflamed breakouts, skin in the middle of an irritation flare, active cold sores or herpes zoster — all are reasons to postpone. Not because the risk is severe, but because the risk of bacterial spread from an inflamed area to the treatment site is real, and an ongoing inflammatory response in the skin reduces result quality.
The schedule is flexible — rescheduling by 1–2 weeks changes nothing. Proceeding while skin is compromised does.
5. Disclose All Medications You Are Currently Taking
Certain medications interact with muscle relaxation formulations — particularly aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, neomycin), medications for neuromuscular conditions, and some cardiovascular drugs. This is not disclosed so the doctor can refuse treatment — it is disclosed so dosage and monitoring can be adjusted appropriately.
Full, honest disclosure during the consultation is the single most important step before any medical procedure.
6. Full Results Appear After 7–14 Days — Not Immediately
This is the point most people are not mentally prepared for — and it causes unnecessary worry. The formulation needs time to bind with neuromuscular receptors. Days 1–3: almost no visible change. Days 5–7: muscles begin to relax. Days 10–14: the complete result becomes clearly visible.
If you look in the mirror on day 3 and see “nothing different” — that is entirely normal. The result is forming, it simply has not arrived yet.
7. Do Not Lie Down or Touch the Treatment Area for 4 Hours
In the first few hours after treatment, the formulation has not yet fully fixed into position. Lying face-down, massaging the face, or wearing a tight helmet over the treated area can cause the product to migrate into adjacent muscle groups unintentionally — potentially causing temporary mild lid heaviness or asymmetry.
Sitting upright and not touching your face for 4 hours is sufficient. After that, resume normal activity.
8. Avoid Heat and Intense Exercise for 24 Hours
Gym workouts, hot yoga, sauna, and very hot showers all increase circulation significantly and can cause uneven distribution of the formulation. 24 hours of avoidance is sufficient. Full rest is not required — simply avoid anything that generates significant body heat.
9. Know the Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention
Most post-treatment reactions are mild and self-resolving — slight redness, minor swelling at the treatment site, brief headache on the first day. But some signs warrant contacting the clinic promptly:
Drooping of one eyelid appearing 2–5 days after treatment, visible asymmetry developing on one side of the face, difficulty swallowing or breathing (extremely rare), or persistent pain at the treatment site lasting more than 48 hours. These occurrences are uncommon but are manageable when reported early — and become more complex if left unaddressed.
Save the clinic’s contact number immediately after your appointment. A reputable practice always provides an after-care contact channel.
10. Schedule a Follow-Up Appointment 2 Weeks Later — Do Not Skip It
The 2-week follow-up is not a formality — it is when the doctor assesses your actual result once the formulation has fully settled, identifies any subtle asymmetry if present, and makes minor adjustments if needed. Many people skip this step because they feel “it looks fine” — but this is the appointment that takes a result from fine to genuinely excellent.
For a first-time treatment, the follow-up also gives the doctor a clear picture of how your facial muscles respond — which forms the basis for more precise, more natural results in subsequent sessions. Individual results may vary.
“Muscle relaxation therapy for wrinkle correction is not complicated — but whether results are good or fall short depends significantly on proper preparation and choosing the right clinic. These 10 points are not meant to add to your anxiety — they are meant to ensure you walk into your first appointment fully informed, with no surprises and no regrets. At HT Derma Aesthetic, every treatment begins with a complete consultation and assessment. No one is taken into a treatment room without fully understanding what is about to happen.
